Intensive Care Unit (I.C.U.) & High Dependency Unit (H.D.U.)

Mediterraneo’s I.C.U. has a capacity of 7 beds that can cover the intensive treatment of any patient.

The multipurpose I.C.U. is equipped with sophisticated devices (inhalers, vital signs monitors, infusion pumps, an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), a continuous hemodialysis -filtration PRISMA CRRT etc), and is also equipped with the specialized medical and nursing staff.

Our I.C.U. manages all critically ill patients with heart problems, respiratory, neurological, trauma injuries, renal failure, who need intensive care treatment with or without mechanical respiratory support.

A standard hemodialysis machine is permanently located in the I.C.U. as well as a continuous filtration device to help immediately deal with renal failure which many critically ill patients may develop.

At Mediterraneo Hospital, the digital transfer of images from the PACS (Picture Archiving & Communication Systems), gives I.C.U. doctors the advantage to immediately retrieve information and expedite diagnosis, and allows for the comparison of test results (CT scan, MRI scans, angiographies etc).

The patients are hospitalized in single or double rooms and simultaneously have the support of specialized personnel for intensive therapy online, connected to the central station, and full 24-hour medical and nursing care.

High Dependency Unit (H.D.U.)

With a capacity of 6 rooms, the Unit accommodates patients in need of increased medical and nursing care, as well as close monitoring (provided by bedside monitors) 24/7.

Some of the cases managed are: patients with heart disease, patients who have undergone serious/critical surgery, patients with serious respiratory problems, neurological defects, as well as patients that are stepping down from the I.C.U.

DIRECT CONNECTION OF THE I.C.U & H.D.U. WITH THE STROKE CENTER

There is close collaboration between the Acute Stroke Unit and the Hospital’s Intensive Care (ICU) & High Dependency Units (HDU). Patients with acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke are treated in the Acute Stroke Unit to receive appropriate treatment, continuous monitoring, and rehabilitation.

A series of diagnostic tests are conducted to investigate and determine the cause of the stroke, as well as to establish the necessary medication for secondary prevention to avoid a recurrence. If deemed necessary, the patient is transferred to the ICU.

Simultaneously, the rehabilitation team is activated, consisting of physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and nutritionists, who gradually contribute to the patient’s recovery and improvement.
