Redefining Boutique Healthcare in the Era of Intelligent Medicine
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of Dragini Clinic in Glyfada, then a seaside resort on the outskirts of Athens. Today, with the Athenian Riviera emerging as one of Europe’s most ambitious investment destinations, the area is home to a fully integrated healthcare group comprising a state-of-the-art private hospital, three primary healthcare centers in Glyfada, Santorini and Paros, and, soon, a dedicated Oncology Day Care Centre in Glyfada.
At the helm is Dr. Georgia Dragini, President of the Group and a physician herself, who continues to build on her family’s legacy while leading the organization through the evolving landscape of modern healthcare.
In a healthcare market increasingly dominated by large, investor-backed hospital groups, Mediterraneo continues to embrace the "Boutique Healthcare" model. What are the strategic risks—and the competitive advantages—of remaining committed to this approach?

Dr. Georgia Dragini COB, Mediterraneo Healthcare Group
The greatest risk in business is not differentiation; it is becoming indistinguishable from everyone else.
Over the past several years, the Greek healthcare sector has steadily evolved towards a highly industrialized, volume-driven model, largely shaped by major investment funds. We consciously chose a different direction: Boutique Healthcare.
For us, this is far more than a branding concept. It is a long-term strategic philosophy. It reflects our conviction that healthcare should never become impersonal, where patients are treated as numbers in a system rather than individuals with unique needs.
Our competitive advantage lies in our agility, our highly specialized clinical expertise, and our ability to deliver truly personalized care. Every patient follows a tailored clinical journey designed around their specific medical needs and personal expectations.
Today’s patient—particularly international patients and those accustomed to premium healthcare services—is not searching for a healthcare factory. They seek clinical excellence delivered in an environment that combines medical innovation with safety, discretion, comfort and exceptional aesthetics.
Where others measure success in patient volumes, we measure it in outcomes, experience and attention to detail. We believe that excellence resides in the details—and it is precisely this philosophy that continues to distinguish Mediterraneo in an increasingly standardized healthcare market.
Mediterraneo Hospital holds internationally recognized quality certifications. How does this investment translate into everyday clinical practice, and how does it support your strategy of attracting and serving discerning international patients?
Mediterraneo Hospital was the first hospital in Greece to be awarded the BS EN 15224 European Quality Certification, the only healthcare-specific quality management standard designed exclusively for hospital services.
Our people are rigorously trained to apply certified procedures and standardized clinical protocols in their daily practice. For every patient, this translates into the highest standards of safety, reduced clinical risk, robust protection of personal data, and, above all, care delivered in accordance with internationally validated, evidence-based clinical guidelines.

Dr. Georgia Dragini, COB, and Mr. Christos Virvilis, General Manager of Mediterraneo Healthcare Group
For international patients choosing the Athenian Riviera for their medical care, these certifications provide immediate reassurance that they will receive treatment that meets—or even exceeds—the standards they expect in their home countries, following some of the world’s most rigorous clinical protocols.
These standards are far more than certificates displayed on a wall—they define the way we operate every single day. Compliance is continuously monitored through a rigorous internal audit framework led by our Quality Committee, the ongoing assessment of key performance indicators (KPIs) across every clinical department, and continuous specialized training for both our medical and nursing teams.
At the same time, internationally recognized certifications provide a common language of trust with leading global insurance providers and international healthcare networks. Combined with our dedicated International Patients Department and a medical team whose physicians have trained at some of the most prestigious institutions in the United States and across Europe, they enable us to deliver not simply medical treatment, but a seamless, premium healthcare experience that combines clinical excellence with personalized care and exceptional hospitality.
Investing in cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Robotics requires significant capital. What strategic criteria guide the Group's investment decisions to ensure that innovation delivers meaningful clinical outcomes rather than simply following the latest technology trends?
Healthcare organizations can easily fall into the trap of investing in technology for the sake of appearances—or simply to showcase the latest equipment in a marketing brochure. Our philosophy is fundamentally different. Every euro we invest must translate into measurable value for our patients.
We do not invest in machines; we invest in Centers of Excellence.
A prime example is Mediterraneo Hospital’ s Comprehensive Stroke Unit. We did not simply acquire the latest generation of diagnostic imaging equipment. We built a fully integrated stroke ecosystem operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, staffed by highly specialized interventional neuroradiologists and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
When advanced mechanical thrombectomy techniques enable a patient to avoid permanent disability within minutes, technology is no longer an expense—it becomes an investment of immeasurable value.
This is the principle that guides every investment we make: technology must always serve better medicine and better patient outcomes.
Our approach has recently been recognized with the ESO Angels Gold Award, one of Europe’s most prestigious distinctions for stroke care. The award is granted on the basis of documented clinical performance and recognizes hospitals that consistently achieve the highest standards in the diagnosis, treatment and management of acute stroke patients.
What do you see as the biggest disruption in private healthcare over the next five years, and how is the Group positioning itself to lead this new era?
The most significant disruption over the next five years will be the disappearance of geographical boundaries in healthcare delivery. The hospital of the future will no longer be defined by the four walls of a building. Instead, healthcare will evolve into integrated ecosystems that accompany patients wherever they are.
At Mediterraneo, we have already begun turning this vision into reality.
Through our Mediterraneo First Care network, we are strategically expanding beyond Athens, first to Santorini and now to Paros. These facilities provide comprehensive primary and urgent care services while remaining fully connected to our flagship hospital in Athens.
It is within this network that we introduced the StrokeViewer platform, an artificial intelligence-powered solution for the rapid diagnosis and management of acute stroke. Through this technology, diagnostic imaging performed at our facilities in Santorini or Paros is transmitted instantly to our specialist stroke team in Athens, enabling expert evaluation and critical treatment decisions within minutes.
Looking ahead, our ambition is to achieve the full digital integration of this network through advanced telemedicine platforms and AI-enabled clinical applications. In practical terms, an international patient will be able to receive an initial assessment in Santorini, undergo treatment or surgery in Athens, and continue follow-up care remotely after returning home.
We do not simply adapt to the future of healthcare—we help shape it.

If I were to summarize our strategy for the next five years, I would say that our ambition is to redefine the meaning of Boutique Healthcare by expanding our model across three strategic pillars: education, technology and highly specialized care.
To support this vision, we are launching a model Nursing Academy in collaboration with public educational institutions, investing in the next generation of healthcare professionals and strengthening the future of our workforce.
At the same time, we are integrating Artificial Intelligence not only into clinical practice but also into the administration and governance of the Mediterraneo Group, enabling smarter decision-making, greater operational efficiency and the optimal use of our resources.
Our most significant milestone, however, will arrive this autumn with the opening of Mediterraneo Point Life in Glyfada, located just a short distance from our main hospital. This state-of-the-art Oncology Day Care Centre has been designed exclusively for patients undergoing cancer treatment.
We understand that a cancer diagnosis is far more than a medical condition—it is one of life’s most profound personal challenges. That is why we have created a space that breaks away from the traditional hospital environment: a setting defined by calm, privacy, elegance and compassion, where every detail has been designed to preserve the patient’s dignity and emotional well-being.
Here, patients will receive their treatment in an environment that feels reassuring rather than clinical, while benefiting from the highest standards of medical safety and the trusted expertise of Mediterraneo.
For us, this is what strategy with a human touch truly means.
